Match preview

A month after Tottenham trailed Chelsea by 12 points in the Premier League they can leapfrog their bitter rivals by beating them on home soil.

Spurs, seemingly reborn under former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, have won four out of five top-flight fixtures since the demise of Mauricio Pochettino to storm to the brink of the top four.

In contrast, Chelsea have completely lost their way with four defeats in their last five culminating in last weekend’s horrific 1-0 home loss to Bournemouth.

Frank Lampard would dearly love to put one over on his former boss to arrest the slide but this is a fixture which looks tailor-made for Tottenham.

Mourinho’s Spurs are all about strength and organisation with pace on the counter.

A central-midfield axis of Eric Dier and Mo Sissoko wins no awards for artistry and the defensive quartet selected by the new Tottenham chief are a formidable unit, albeit prone to mistakes. They have conceded at least two goals in five of the seven matches in which he has been in charge – but they don't lack power.

And power seems to fluster Chelsea. It did at Everton where Lampard’s men were miles off the pace as they were bullied into a 3-1 loss and it’s not the first time in recent weeks that they have looked limited.

The return of Antonio Rudiger should make them stronger but they still look too open.

On the basis of last week’s 2-1 win at Wolves, Tottenham don’t seem perturbed if they can't dominate matches. Indeed we saw that at home to Burnley as well, when Spurs won 5-0 with just 45 per cent possession.

It’s all about control with Mourinho, who backs his front men to operate properly and successfully and that’s far likelier now that he has got a tune out of Dele Alli. That Harry Kane scores goals is a given and equally Heung-Min Son represents a massive problem for defenders and he is in flying form. Christian Eriksen, as many predicted, is being well and truly sidelined.

They are scoring plenty of goals as well as conceding them – only the top three have scored more than Tottenham while these sides went into the weekend boasting the worst defensive records in the top nine. Their matches have produced an identical 3.29 goals per game.

Over 2.5 goals, therefore, looks likely and is priced accordingly short. Over 3.5 goals is a tempting bet too.

Key stat

Tottenham have scored 18 goals in their last five home games.
