Match preview

Sleepy Spurs are just about getting away with their sluggish starts but back them to be caught napping by Arsenal, who can complete their first North London derby double in nine years.

With no sign that Mikel Arteta's men are going to hit a wall and every sign that Antonio Conte's side are struggling for consistency, the visitors get the nod.

There was just a point between these clubs when they met at The Emirates in October, a game in which Arsenal hit the afterburners and Spurs hit the self-destruct button, especially Emerson Royal who was sent off in a well-deserved 3-1 win for the hosts.

Three-and-a-bit months later that gap between these bitter rivals has widened to 11 points - and Arsenal have a game in hand - and expect it to be up to 14 by the final whistle.

Since that meeting in the autumn, Tottenham have been depressingly inconsistent, having failed to win six of their last 11.

They have lost three of their last four at home and if the source of the flatlining is their inability to start games the right way, then it's an issue that they seem incapable of resolving.

They've scored ten first-half goals and 27 after the break. In four starts since the World Cup they have not scored in the first 45 minutes and looked really average each time.

For whatever reasons they are leaving themselves too much to do and while they got away with it against Crystal Palace and Portsmouth over the last week, mis-steps against Arsenal – in the first half or second – will be punished.

Arteta, doubtless trying to sound enigmatic and respectful, simply came across as confused as everyone else in his press conference on Friday when he said sometimes Spurs start well, sometimes they don't. "I don't know what to expect," he said, mirroring the thoughts of tens of thousands of Tottenham fans.

That's definitely the issue with Spurs – they veer between looking leggy and inspired and stringing 90 minutes - or even 60 - together seems beyond them.

And Arsenal, who have taken 29 points out of a last possible 33, won't let them off the hook during those tame periods.

The Gunners struggled to break down Newcastle on their last league outing, drawing 0-0 - their first blank of the season.

But they will offer a largely incessant zip from their sublime front four, which is anchored immaculately by their classy midfield duo. They look the better team of these two and know their lines.

Home advantage doesn't appear to be much of an edge for Tottenham – Arsenal have won more on the road than Conte's side have on their own patch.
