Match preview

Southampton and West Ham won't lack motivation for their contest at St Mary's after failing to win any of their last three games and the visitors look more likely to snap their sequence.

The top half of the Premier League is extremely congested and Southampton's recent wobble has seen them slip from fourth to ninth.

They drew 0-0 at Fulham on Saturday and could have few complaints having lost the shot count 10-3, although a couple of close calls went against them when goals from Shane Long and Theo Walcott were disallowed for marginal offsides.

Long, who has scored just two league goals since the start of last season, was making his first start of this campaign and could be involved again because Saints remain without key injured attackers Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond.

Southampton will be stronger in midfield with Oriel Romeu returning from a ban but the absence of Ings could leave them struggling to justify favouritism.

West Ham are also likely to be without a key forward with Michael Antonio short of match fitness, but they improved in the second half of Sunday's 2-2 draw at home to Brighton with substitutes Manuel Lanzini and Andrei Yarmolenko impressing.

Talented attacking midfielders Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma were unused substitutes and West Ham's greater squad strength could be important at a stage of the season when the games come thick and fast.

The Hammers have not lost to a side outside of the established big six since the opening weekend of the season and they look decent value against Southampton at odds-against with the draw no bet.

Key stat

West Ham have won their last five matches against Southampton.
