Match preview

A real mid-table clash at St Mary's does not have a huge amount riding on it but Danny Ings can give himself a shot at the Premier League's Golden Boot by getting among the goals for Southampton against Sheffield United.

Personal glory is all that is really on the line apart from the prize-money accumulated the further up the league you go and there's around £4 million at stake for United, who can finish as high as eighth or as low as tenth.

Southampton are going to finish either 11th or tenth and both teams can be pleased with their campaigns given Saints were being spoken of as relegation candidates by many following their humiliating 9-0 loss to Leicester in October.

United were considered drop possibilities from the moment they gained promotion, however, the ante-post relegation favourites have had a remarkable season and it says much for their campaign that Chris Wilder may be feeling a touch frustrated to miss out on European qualification.

Successive defeats to Leicester and Everton ended those hopes and they could be heading for a fourth defeat in five on the road.

Slick Saints, unbeaten in six, are doing their best work at the finish and 21-goal Ings is only two behind Jamie Vardy in the race for the Golden Boot. He has opened the scoring ten times in this season's Premier League and another early strike would give him a sniff.

Key stat

Danny Ings is the most frequent first goalscorer in this season's Premier League.
