Match preview

Newcastle's Callum Wilson is among a group of strikers battling it out for a place in England's World Cup squad and he can enhance his claims with another strong performance at Southampton.

With the start of the World Cup just two weeks away, there may be the temptation for some of the England's first-choice personnel to sidestep some physical confrontations over the next two matches.

But there will be others who need to be a full-throttle to force their way into Gareth Southgate's plans and Wilson is among them.

The 30-year-old won the last of his four England caps in 2019 and was left out of Southgate's squad for Nations League matches against Italy and Germany in September.

However, Wilson gave Southgate a subtle nudge with the opening strike in Newcastle's 2-1 success at Tottenham a fortnight ago and he added a further two goals in the Magpies' 4-0 rout of Aston Villa last weekend.

Wilson could be joined in the Toon attack by Allan Saint-Maximin, who came off the bench against Villa and is pushing to make his first start since August.

Eddie Howe's Magpies have won five of their last six games and will fancy their chances against a Saints' side who have struggled to get going.

Saints have won just three of 13 matches and will be concerned about the prospect of sliding into the drop zone before the league pauses for the World Cup after next weekend's fixtures.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side have not scored more than one goal in any of their last seven matches and they lacked composure when missing some decent chances in the second-half of last Saturday's 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace.

Southampton are among a clutch of teams who will be fearing for their top-flight status and their vulnerability could be seized upon by Wilson, who looks a solid bet to stay on the scoring trail with the opener at St Mary's.
