Match preview

Frank Lampard's biggest test of his managerial career comes against his former club and the Chelsea boss is set to come out swinging against Premier League champions Manchester City.

The home side are capable of landing a few punches too, however, and it could end up being in a high-scoring defeat for Chelsea, with City to win 3-1 and 3-2 appealing most in what should be an end-to-end contest.

Not many will have predicted City to be down in fourth, nine points behind Liverpool after 12 matches, but that is the large deficit facing Pep Guardiola's outfit, who have little margin for error in the rest of the campaign.

There are defensive concerns with Aymeric Laporte still sidelined and a clean sheet seems unlikely against such an attacking side, but most teams who attempt to trade blows with City find themselves knocked out.

City have won 22 of their last 24 home matches and were slightly unfortunate to go down 3-1 at Anfield before the international break with Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling among those who threatened the goal without showing their usual accuracy.

Bernardo Silva's suspension is offset by the return to fitness of Ederson and David Silva and a front three of Aguero, Sterling and Riyad Mahrez could still prove too hot for Chelsea.

Lampard's young guns have rightly received plenty of praise this term for their enterprising attitude and fearless approach, but they have already conceded 17 Premier League goals from a fairly soft set of fixtures.

Chelsea's six successive wins have propelled them above City and level on points with second-placed Leicester, but there are holes in the form for those who want to be super-critical.

The level of opposition - Burnley (tenth), Brighton (11th), Crystal Palace (12th), Newcastle (13th), Watford (18th) and Southampton (19th) - isn't comparable to the challenge facing them at the Etihad, and Chelsea have been found wanting against the big six.

The Blues have lost to Manchester United twice and they also suffered a home defeat to Liverpool, but the midfield of N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho will still be able to cope better than most against the aggressive City press.

Only 11-goal Jamie Vardy is above Tammy Abraham in the Premier League goalscoring charts and he has made his mark in the Champions League and on England duty in a fine campaign.

That should make for goals and lots of them at both ends.

Key stat

Chelsea have kept only one domestic away clean sheet in 2019.
