Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been installed as favourite to be the next boss at Aston Villa after Dean Smith was sacked on Sunday.

Smith became the fifth Premier League manager to lose his job this season after Villa suffered their fifth successive league defeat in a 1-0 loss at Southampton on Friday.

The former Brentford boss took the helm in October 2018 when he took Villa up from the Championship and then guided them to the League Cup final in 2020.

The Midlands outfit finished 11th last season but Smith left them in 15th place, just two points above the relegation zone.

Gerrard, who led the Gers to an unbeaten league season, is available at 6-4 with Betfair and Paddy Power to take the reins and has already been linked with the post.

However, Kasper Hjulmand has also been linked to the post after he lead Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

Hjulmand is 5-1, alongside Paulo Fonseca, who has been mentioned alongside a number of recent Premier League vacancies. Fonseca's price is available with Coral.

Former Villa coach and Gerrard's ex-England team-mate John Terry can be backed at 4-1.

Frank Lampard is 12-1 for the vacancy but is 8-11 to be the new manager of Norwich after the Canaries parted company with Daniel Farke on Saturday evening.

Lampard has been out of work since being replaced at Chelsea by Thomas Tuchel in January and was previously in charge of Derby in the Championship.

Farke was sacked soon after City had clamed their first Premier Leaguie win of the season when they won 2-1 at another team recently promoted to the top flight, Brentford.

Bournemouth manager Scott Parker is 12-1 for the Carrow Road vacancy while former captain Steve Bruce, who recently lost his job at Newcastle, is 12-1 with Hills.
