Ange Postecoglou is still searching for his first win as Nottingham Forest manager and the Aussie will be desperate to get off the mark at Newcastle on Sunday.

The Magpies thumped Union Saint-Gilloise 4-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday and they were unlucky to lose their last home game 2-1 to Arsenal.

Seven days on, the Toon will be looking to make amends with victory over Sunday's struggling visitors.

Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest preview

Ange Postecoglou is making the wrong kind of history, with Thursday's 3-2 Europa League defeat to Midtjylland seeing him become the first permanent Nottingham Forest coach in 100 years to fail to win any of his first six games at the helm.

The Australian insisted he is not feeling any pressure despite the City Ground faithful chanting he would be 'sacked in the morning' during the defeat to the Danes, but Sunday's league trip to Newcastle could put that to the test.

Eddie Howe's Magpies responded to last Sunday's last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Arsenal by outclassing Union Saint-Giloise 4-0 in the Champions League in midweek.

With six points from as many games, Newcastle need to force their way up the table soon but may be only now settling into something like a rhythm following Alexander Isak's summer-long transfer saga.

Isak's replacement, Nick Woltemade, is a different threat to the Swede but could be just as effective, and after getting to grips with Gabriel Magalhaes last Sunday, the giant German will relish another physical battle against Nikola Milenkovic.

With Yoane Wissa still absent, Woltemade will continue to lead the line for the Magpies and he, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy are quick enough to get in behind a Forest backline still adapting to Postecoglou's more proactive approach.

The visitors are at least scoring goals, finding the net in four of their last five, while Newcastle have conceded in their last three at home.

Postecoglou's style usually produces end-to-end action, regardless of who he is coaching, and he is unlikely to change his ways, even with the current scrutiny on him.

With only one defeat in the league since September's international break, Woltemade and company can take advantage of the Australian's open approach by helping Newcastle head into the October hiatus in high spirits.

What a start for Woltemade

Woltemade has made a positive impression on the Toon Army with two goals in his two home league appearances for Newcastle.

The German also found the net against USG and will threaten a Forest side yet to record a clean sheet this season.

Scoreboard switch

Newcastle won 4-3 the last time the teams met on Tyneside, but Forest's 3-1 success on Boxing Day 2023 feels like a more realistic scoreline to be repeated, albeit in reverse.

For all Postecoglou's issues, Forest are at least creating chances, tallying 22 shots in the defeat to Sunderland, and have enough quality to make a mark at St James'.

Neco Williams to be carded

Newcastle's elusive wide players will pose problems for Neco Williams. The Welshman has already received three yellow cards this term and may enter the book again.

Joelinton to be carded

Joelinton's all-action style leaves the Brazilian susceptible to a ticking off from the ref, picking up three cautions in his last four appearances.

Bruno Guimaraes over 0.5 fouls

Bruno has committed 12 fouls in five league appearances and, like Joelinton, is never afraid to commit a tactical infringement.
