Newcastle vs Crystal Palace predictions
Last week could not have gone much better for Newcastle. Not only did they rout Manchester United 4-1, but Chelsea and Nottingham Forest dropped points against Ipswich and Everton, leaving the Magpies in a commanding position in their bid to secure Champions League football for the second time in three seasons.
The Magpies were irresistible in their thrashing of Manchester United, racking up seven corners to their opponents' two, winning the shot count 13-9 and posting an impressive expected-goals figure of 2.2.
They managed to net four goals without leading scorer Alexander Isak getting in on the act, showing how their strength comes through unity rather than individuals.
Jason Tindall, filling in for the ill Eddie Howe, had no issue in starting Harvey Barnes ahead of Anthony Gordon and he was rewarded for that bold call as Barnes netted two of Newcastle's goals on Sunday.
The Magpies are in fourth following that victory and, due to their immense strength in depth and current form, it would be no surprise to see them leapfrog Nottingham Forest into third place with a win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
The Eagles had been in great form themselves prior to the weekend, stringing together an eight-game unbeaten run and reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup, but they will be reeling after a heavy 5-2 defeat at Manchester City and Oliver Glasner will be eager to avoid further embarrassment at St James' Park.
However, even with Marc Guehi back from suspension, their defence may come under a lot of pressure on Tyneside. Newcastle's 4-1 rout of the Red Devils was no fluke, with the Magpies scoring ten goals while winning their last three Premier League home games.
Wednesday's hosts have also put four past Nottingham Forest and netted three against both Liverpool and Aston Villa at St James' this term, suggesting the goals should flow as they secure three points against the Eagles.
Palace, led by 13-goal Jean-Philippe Mateta and creative genius Eberechi Eze, could help bring up a high goal tally, but as their last two away games have seen them draw with already-relegated Southampton and ship five at Manchester City suggests they may fall short.
Confidence is extremely high at Newcastle thanks to a five-game winning streak which includes a triumph over Liverpool in the EFL Cup final and a 4-3 home victory against Nottingham Forest, and they can make it six in a row against Palace.
Over 2.5 goals has landed in the Magpies' last nine Premier League home games and it could be worth combining that selection with a home victory to eke out some extra value.
