Arsenal need no reminding of just how intimidating St James' Park can be when the Toon Army are in full cry.

The Gunners have been beaten on four of their last five trips to Newcastle and another defeat on Tyneside on Sunday would be a hammer blow to their title aspirations.

Mikel Arteta's visitors are already playing catch-up in the title race following a 1-0 defeat at Liverpool and last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City, but they won't get much sympathy from Eddie Howe’s Magpies.

A new-look Newcastle, who are still adjusting to life without Alexander Isak, have taken an underwhelming six points from five matches this term,  but they've been beaten only once and this is the sort of challenge that they relish.

Newcastle’s sole league defeat came in a 3-2 loss at home to champions Liverpool, who broke Newcastle's heroic resistance in the tenth minute of stoppage time.

Barcelona were also made to work hard for a 2-1 victory at St James' in the Champions League ten days ago, which shows that Arsenal will have to fight for any rewards on Tyneside.

The Gunners have lost just one of their last 16 away games in the Premier League, but they have drawn seven times in that run and four clean sheets in five suggests Newcastle will be tough to breach.

Arteta's cautious tactics in last Sunday's crunch meeting with City were called into question earlier this week, and the Spaniard will need to change something if they are to get any change out of a Newcastle side who have kept three clean sheets in the pair's last four meetings.

Arsenal’s attacking impetus would be enhanced if Arteta opts to start Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka on Tyneside, but the Gunners haven't carved out too many clear-cut chances in the league so far and Newcastle's solid defence could keep them in check.

Timber in for a tough time

Newcastle fans will be delighted that livewire winger Anthony Gordon is available after suspension, and the return of the England international could spell trouble for Arsenal right-back Jurrien Timber.

The Dutchman picked up seven bookings in 30 Premier League appearances last season, one of which came at St James', and he has already been shown yellow in big games against both Manchester clubs this term.
