Match preview

Frank Lampard enjoyed a winning start to life back in top-flight management at the weekend and can make it two out of two by masterminding victory for Everton at Newcastle.

Lampard's 12-month absence was ended with a comprehensive 4-1 thumping of Brentford in the FA Cup on Saturday, the type of one-sided working over which can only lift spirits at a club who have been plunging down the Premier League.

Now comes the appreciably more important task of seeing off one of their relegation rivals and there is every reason to believe they'll be too good for the Toon.

Lampard certainly looks to have breathed life into a Toffees team who had all but downed tools under Rafa Benitez.

Having Yerry Mina and Dominic Calvert-Lewin fit is a bonus, the emergence of Anthony Gordon is a massive bonus for Lampard who seems to get the best out of homespun youngsters, Richarlison looked totally enthused against the Bees and there's the added bonus of trying to integrate Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek into the group, two players who have always had great moments, if not great games, in them.

Lampard will undoubtedly preach more adventure and the front three against Brentford was electric. It would be a brave call to dismantle it, even with fit-again top scorer Calvert-Lewin back in the mix.

This doesn't look a group of players who should be anywhere near the bottom six and maybe with Lampard's hand on the tiller that will prove to be the case.

For Newcastle, however, it's a different story.

Eddie Howe has thrown his Saudi-studded dice in January, bringing in a handful of new players and praying they can integrate quickly.

They went into hibernation – they've had a 17-day break going into this game – with a 1-0 win at Leeds, only their second win of the season. Five points out of the last three matches has stopped the bleeding and while they aren't conceding goals, they aren't scoring them, either. They've scored just six in their last ten and without Callum Wilson it's still hard to be overly optimistic that they can extricate themselves from their mess.

Sure, Allan Saint-Maximin is a joy with the ball at his feet but a liability with the goal at his mercy, while Chris Wood's arrival means a change in tactic which may not necessarily bring out the best in one or two in black-and-white shirts.

Everton have had a run-out since the layoff and looked sharp and that might give them an edge in a game which promises to be desperately tight.
