Match preview
It's a good few years since treble talk was in the air around Old Trafford and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men can stay ahead of their rivals in pursuit of the Premier League leg of the tricast by clocking up three points at Sheffield United's expense.
Also chasing glory in the Europa League and very definitely the FA Cup after seeing off Liverpool, the one they really want is the Premier League trophy, a piece of silverware which once upon a time used to be glued to the sideboard at the Theatre of Dreams.
In the box seat going into this midweek round of matches, Solskjaer's men can get the better of a poor Sheffield United, although it wouldn't be like them to make the job easy.
Manchester United have become masters in the art of doing it the hard way, having to come from behind to win at Fulham in their previous Premier League outing and repeating the feat against Liverpool in the FA Cup.
That's eight times now they have come from behind to win this season - they have a haul of 23 first-half points and a far more impressive 39 in a second-half table.
To that end, and accepting that the hosts are short enough over 90 minutes, backing the scores to be level at half-time and the Red Devils to go on and win looks a fair shout.
Solskjaer's men have been level at the break a Premier League-high 11 times this season, closely followed by Chris Wilder's side on ten.
There's a spirit at Old Trafford which hasn't been seen for some time and an uncanny knack of turning modest starts into rampant finishes, a commodity that should ensure they extend their unbeaten league run to 14 with a victory here, but they are likely to have to earn it.
That's also because, while there is precious little to like about Sheffield United as a football team just now, they do to continue to scrap and that means they still take all the beating despite their standing in the table. Of their 16 defeats, 11 have been by a single goal including the reverse of this fixture, a 3-2 loss at Bramall Lane just before Christmas.
The Blades are 11-1 to claim a shock victory, but with just one win to their name – and victims Newcastle were down to ten men when United scored their one and only winning goal this season – they make almost no appeal.
Wilder continues to bemoan the absence of Jack O'Connell and now he has to do without another of key defensive linchpin John Egan, who is suspended.
And Bruno Fernandes goes into the game relatively fresh having played only the last 24 minutes against Liverpool on Sunday.
Key stat
United have won all six domestic games Edinson Cavani has started.
