Manchester United's problems persist under Ruben Amorim and, having suffered a 3-0 defeat away at fierce rivals Manchester City last Sunday, the troubled Red Devils face another high-profile Premier League match at home to unbeaten Chelsea.

The Blues have failed to win on their last five visits to Old Trafford but everything looks in place for the Club World Cup winners to put that record firmly behind them.

Manchester United vs Chelsea preview

Ruben Amorim is under immense pressure going into Saturday's showdown with Chelsea as defeat has the potential to be the final nail in the coffin for the Manchester United manager and the Blues can leave the Old Trafford board with a difficult decision to make.

Failing to qualify for European football was supposed to be a blessing in disguise for the Red Devils following a summer revamp that cost £200m but progress has been minimal and they have taken only four points from their first four Premier League games.

United’s sole success came thanks to an injury-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes in a 3-2 victory at home to Burnley and they have also been knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two side Grimsby.

There was a chance that the international break would allow them to freshen things up but it was the same old story last weekend as United were brushed aside 3-0 in the Manchester derby at the Etihad and improvement is required rapidly.

But Amorim appears too stubborn to shy away from his favoured 3-4-2-1 system and it is hard to envisage an upturn in form against Chelsea.

The Portuguese boss hasn’t been helped by an injury to one of his summer signings, Matheus Cunha, while Benjamin Sesko has yet to fire and is still working his way to peak fitness.

However, United’s playing style isn’t getting the best out of his personnel - star man Bruno Fernandes is being wasted in a deeper role - and defensively they appear too easy to exploit.

Chelsea have had less time to prepare, following Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat at Bayern in the Champions League but having one of the deepest squads in the Premier League helps negate that concern.

The Blues have won two and drawn two of their four league outings and having talisman figure Cole Palmer back to full fitness will take some of the pressure off Joao Pedro, who has made a seamless transition since arriving from Brighton.

Mazraoui to catch the eye of the referee

Manchester United collected six bookings in each of their two Premier League meetings with Chelsea last season and Amad Diallo, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte were three of the common culprits.

However, Noussair Mazraoui was booked in the 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge and, having recently returned from injury, he could collect another card. A face-off with Marc Cucurella and Pedro Neto is a demanding task and he committed two fouls in the derby defeat to City.

Red Devils could lose their heads

United racked  up 12 cards to Chelsea’s three in last season’s two Premier League meetings, and in the last two encounters at Old Trafford the Red Devils have received four more bookings than the Blues on each occasion.

The Red Devils have been well disciplined this season but with pressure rising so may the aggression levels and Chelsea have tricky, attacking players who can draw plenty of fouls.

Chelsea or draw double chance

The Blues picked up four points against Manchester United last term and, with the Red Devils clearly troubled, they should at least stretch their unbeaten start in the league to five.

Over 2.5 cards for Manchester United

The Red Devils collected six cards in each of last season's two Premier League meetings with Chelsea, who have the attacking talent to draw plenty of fouls.

Cole Palmer anytime goalscorer

The Chelsea forward has four goals in as many league appearances for the Blues against United and he has scored in back-to-back away games at Brentford and Bayern.
