Match preview

Jose Mourinho has guided Tottenham to three straight successes and he can maintain his 100 per cent start as manager by masterminding victory over his former club Manchester United.

Mourinho has had an immediate impact since replacing Mauricio Pochettino in the Spurs dugout, steering his new troops to confidence-building wins over West Ham (3-2), Olympiakos (4-2) and Bournemouth (3-2).

There is still room for improvement, most notably in defence, but Tottenham’s attacking talents are growing in belief and that may spell danger for a Manchester United side who have managed just two wins in their last nine league games.

One player who has been reborn by Mourinho’s arrival is Dele Alli, who has relished a more prominent midfield role which has seen him playing closer to striker Harry Kane.

Alli was instrumental in the 3-2 win over Bournemouth, scoring twice, and his upturn in form could be crucial for Tottenham and their renewed hope of a top-four finish.

Back-to-back defeats for Chelsea mean Tottenham are just six points shy of the Champions League qualification places and Mourinho knows the importance of maintaining their strong run before the hectic Christmas schedule.

Mourinho had mixed success during his two-year tenure as Manchester United manager but was sacked in December 2018 with the Red Devils having made their worst start to a campaign in 28 years.

Fast forward 12 months, however, and United are not in any better shape under the less experienced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In fact, United are four points worse off than at this stage last year and they have been held to score draws in their last two league assignments by promoted pair Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

The Red Devils were completely outplayed in the opening 45 minutes of the 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane - they had been 2-0 behind - and it took them to go a goal down in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa to trigger a reaction.

United have lacked both energy and creativity in midfield without the services of injured pair Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay and Solskjaer has confirmed that Pogba is again out, adding extra importance to the late fitness assessment of the young Scot.

Marcus Rashford has been the one shining light for Manchester United this season - he is the only player to hit double figures across all competitions - but Mourinho will know better than most how to nullify him.

Given the pair's recent defensive performances, it should come as no surprise to see both teams to score at a short price.

However, Tottenham are enjoying their brightest period of the season and with confidence restored, there may be better value in backing them to claim maximum points.

Key stat

Manchester United have won only three of their last ten Premier League home games.
