Liverpool vs West Ham predictions

Liverpool's 26-game unbeaten run in the Premier League was snapped by a 3-2 defeat to Fulham last time out but there has at least been some good news for the Reds heading into Sunday's clash with West Ham at Anfield.

The Mohamed Salah saga reached its conclusion this week as the Egyptian put pen to paper on a new two-year contract with Liverpool, ending speculation about his future.

It will come as a huge relief to Reds fans given that Salah has registered an eye-watering 44 goal involvements in the Premier League this season, although he has not scored or assisted in any of his last four games.

Indeed, Liverpool as a team are in a bit of a rut – or at least as much of a rut as Premier League champions-elect can find themselves in.

In their last four matches, the Reds have been dumped out of the Champions League by Paris St-Germain, lost the EFL Cup final to Newcastle, scraped past Merseyside rivals Everton 1-0 and then lost 3-2 to the Cottagers last weekend.

It would take a gargantuan collapse for them not to win the Premier League but Arne Slot will still be concerned by his team's recent trajectory.

The good news for Liverpool is that they are back at Anfield to host a West Ham side who have barely shown any signs of progress under Graham Potter.

Since Potter's arrival in January, West Ham have averaged just one goal per game in the Premier League and their expected-goals figure per match has been just 0.94.

The absence of striker Michail Antonio has undoubtedly played its part and the Hammers should have Germany international Niclas Fullkrug back to lead the line on Sunday.

Already this year, though, West Ham have drawn blanks against Crystal Palace, Brentford, Newcastle and Wolves and they will not have good memories of their last meeting with Liverpool, in their final fixture of 2024.

The Reds ran riot in a 5-0 win at the London Stadium on that occasion and, while this is unlikely to be as comprehensive a victory, Liverpool are still the team to back.

The absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold appears to be hindering Salah at the moment and, given Liverpool's recent lull, goals could be at a premium.

Only one of Liverpool's last 14 matches produced over 4.5 goals – the 3-2 loss to Fulham last time out – and the value in this contest is in backing the Reds to win a game featuring four goals or fewer.
