Match preview

Liverpool dug deep to see off Ajax at Anfield in Tuesday's Champions League encounter and will be looking to make it 65 league matches unbeaten at their Merseyside fortress against Wolves.

That the Reds have qualified for the last 16 of Europe's premier competition and are riding high in the Premier League but are still thought to be underperforming shows how much Jurgen Klopp has achieved at the club.

There have been wobbles this season - they lost to Atalanta and drew at Brighton in two of their last three games - but they still deserve respect in the betting, especially on home turf.

They have won all five of their home Premier League assignments this term, scoring 14 goals and shipping six in the process and that run featured a 3-0 hammering of a resurgent Leicester side.

The Reds have managed to stay in contention at the top of the table despite a growing injury list featuring Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and now goalkeeper Alisson.

Their defence has bore the brunt of their injury deluge and that may tempt punters to back more goals in upcoming fixtures but it is arguably having the opposite effect, with Liverpool reluctant to overcommit in the final third knowing their rearguard is vulnerable.

They have scored only twice in their last three matches against Atalanta, Brighton and Ajax, who actually saw more of the ball than Liverpool, and backing a home win and under 3.5 goals looks a solid bet at Anfield.

Whether it be a tactical tweak or the loss of Diogo Jota to the Merseysiders in the summer, Wolves have also struggled for goals this term and will not be helped by the absence of premier marksman Raul Jimenez, who sustained a fractured skull against Arsenal.

Their 2-1 win over the Gunners last time out was only the third time this season they have scored more than once in a league game and they have managed only 11 goals in ten Premier League matches.

But they remain pretty tight at the back, keeping clean sheets against Sheffield United, Fulham, Leeds and Crystal Palace this term and should keep the scoreline respectable against the wounded Reds.

This fixture has failed to exhilarate in the way many would expect in the last two seasons with the last five meetings producing a total 11 goals and, as they have done in each of the last three, Liverpool can edge it against Nuno's men.

Key stat

Wolves's ten Premier League matches have featured an average of 2.2 goals per game this term.
