Liverpool v Manchester United match preview

Liverpool have defeated 18 of their 19 Premier League rivals this season and they can complete the full set by seeing off bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield.

There was nothing fortunate about United's 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool in October and Red Devils fans left Old Trafford with a sense of frustration after seeing their side concede an 85th-minute leveller.

United got their tactics spot on by pressing at the right times and had looked reasonably comfortable until Liverpool substitute Adam Lallana popped up with his first and only goal of the season.

However, Liverpool responded to their Manchester setback with 12 successive league wins and are a more frightening proposition at Anfield, where they are unbeaten in 37 matches.

Jurgen Klopp remains cautious whenever asked about the title race but it is hard to see how his team are going to drop enough points to give the chasers – Manchester City and Leicester – any encouragement.

His team coped with the absence of key players over the busy Christmas and New Year period and the squad looks as strong as it has for several weeks with Fabinho, Joel Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri back in the mix.

Last Saturday's fixture at Tottenham was seen as a potential banana skin but Liverpool came through with flying colours, picking up a deserved 1-0 victory.

There were a few hairy moments in the last 20 minutes but Liverpool dominated the majority of the game and should have been out of sight before the hosts produced a late flurry.

They will approach the United game in a similar manner, looking to squeeze the opposition and play at a tempo which makes them very difficult to live with.

The best hope of responding is to defend well and counter-attack with pace and precision.

United deployed those tactics to great effect when winning 2-1 at Manchester City last month.

Marcus Rashford excelled at the Etihad with a man-of-the-match performance. But he is unlikely to feature against Liverpool having suffered a back injury after coming on as a substitute during Wednesday's 1-0 success at home to Wolves in the FA Cup.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not totally ruled Rashford out of contention but it seems unlikely that the 22-year-old will be able to function at his best.

In any case, United will be up against a stronger defence than they faced at the Etihad.

Liverpool have registered shutouts in their last six matches, allowing them to stay on the winning trail despite often failing to reach their peak in attack.

The Reds served a reminder of their devastating attacking potential when winning 4-0 at Leicester on Boxing Day but that was the only time they have scored more than two goals during their last ten fixtures.

Solid defence has been underpinning most of their recent successes and a low-scoring victory looks likely against United, who have kept clean sheets in three of their last four matches.

Key stat

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 37 home matches.
