Match preview

Liverpool have spent a few painful days adjusting to the sight of Manchester United at the top of the Premier League but they have had the upper hand over the Red Devils in recent years and can jump back above them with a victory.

United deservedly reached the summit because they are one of the few teams who have kept churning out positive results on a consistent basis.

Their haul of 29 points from the last 11 games has taken them from 15th to first but the markets remain unconvinced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who remain fairly distant third favourites for the title.

It would take just one big performance and result to change the perception but United have not won at Anfield since a 1-0 success in January 2016 and the last time any visiting Premier League side picked up three points at the venue was April 2017 when Crystal Palace triumphed 2-1.

Liverpool's connection with their supporters has influenced a lot of matches over the years, but the Reds have continued to deliver in front of empty stands and their home points tally (22 from 24) sets the Premier League standard.

Jurgen Klopp's side had a few poor results either side of the new year and are unlikely to have taken many positives from their 4-1 success away to Aston Villa's youngsters in the FA Cup third round.

However they have performed to a high level in the toughest matches, taking ten points from 12 against 'big-six' sides, and remain in the title hunt despite the obvious handicap of injuries to several key players.

Neither Virgil Van Dijk nor Joe Gomez have been involved for over two months and injury-prone centre-back Joel Matip, who faces a race against time to feature against United, has featured in just eight Premier League games.

A fully-fit Matip would boost Liverpool's chances but it is their front three – Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane – which tips the scales in their favour.

Liverpool approached the weekend as the league's top scorers with 37 goals from 17 games, including a 13-goal contribution from Salah.

Mane has had a quieter time but broke the deadlock in notable victories away to Chelsea (2-0) and at home to Arsenal (3-1) and has the power and pace to unsettle United's backline.

A solid defence in recent has been a key facet for United, who have registered three 1-0 victories in their last five games.

However the Red Devils' rearguard often buckled against Champions League opposition – conceding ten goals in six group games – and they may struggle to cope with the Premier League's most potent attack.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 67 Premier League home games
