Match preview

Everton manager Marco Silva is clinging on to his job by a thread after a string of disappointing results and a Premier League showdown with dominant Merseyside rivals Liverpool may ramp up the pressure on the Portuguese boss.

Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Leicester left the Toffees just two points above the relegation zone after 14 matches and Silva finds himself in a sticky situation where only a positive result may save him.

But starved of confidence and with defensive frailties persisting, a quick turnaround and a trip to the Anfield fortress could be the final straw for Silva.

Liverpool are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and they have been a class apart on their own patch, where they have carved out a 47-game league unbeaten run.

All seven home league matches this term have resulted in victory and even when performances have lacked their usual oomph, they have still found a way to outsmart the opposition.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have already claimed the scalps of Arsenal, Tottenham, Leicester and Manchester City at home this term and, even though a derby can level the playing field, the gulf in class is too big to suggest Everton can escape Anfield unscathed.

The devastating front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino continue to run riot - they have scored 18 of Liverpool's 32 league goals between them - and it may not take much for Everton's rearguard to cave in to the pressure.

That said, a notable trend in Liverpool’s winning sequence has been their inability to keep the ball out of their net.

The Reds have managed just two league clean sheets this term and they have conceded in all seven home games, failing to shut out Norwich, Newcastle and Brighton.

That, along with the suspension of Brazilian shot-stopper Alisson and injury to defensive protector Fabinho, must offer Everton some hope of at least getting on the scoresheet.

Everton’s performance at the King Power Stadium was much improved on the lacklustre 2-0 display at home to Norwich a week before, and there was enough in it to suggest they haven’t yet given up on Silva.

The Toffees pushed a lively Leicester all the way and they have the attacking assets required to cause Liverpool some problems too.

Tricky winger Richarlison has scored in consecutive away matches and will be important for the Toffees on the counter, while the technically-gifted Gylfi Sigurdsson has a magic right foot.

Wing-backs Lucas Digne and Djibril Sidibe are also bright going forward and they should ensure Liverpool’s flying full-backs Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have defensive responsibilities to focus on.

A freakish added-time winner from Divock Origi helped Liverpool see off the challenge of Everton at Anfield last December and although it may be less stressful for the home fans this time, Klopp's crew are not defending well enough to keep the Toffees completely at bay.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in four of Everton's last five Premier League matches.
