Match preview

Arsenal have made significant progress under Mikel Arteta but the acid test for the rejuvenated London outfit will be a trip to Anfield to face reigning champions Liverpool in the Premier League.

The Gunners have avoided defeat in both of their meetings with the Merseysiders under Arteta but one of those came at the Emirates after Liverpool had sealed the title and the other in this term's Community Shield, which Arsenal won on penalties.

Having beaten Wolves, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea since returning to action in June, Arsenal look more disciplined and aggressive against top opposition but it would still be a bold move to back them at the fortress Anfield.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 60 Premier League contests at home, last losing 2-1 to Crystal Palace back in April 2017.

And while they showed defensive fragility in their 4-3 win over Leeds on the opening weekend, it seemed business returned to normal against Chelsea last time out.

Jurgen Klopp's men were in complete control in their 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge, winning the shot count 18-5 and seeing 62 per cent possession which was impressive even allowing for the fact Chelsea played just over half the match with ten men.

As for Arsenal, their 3-4-3 set-up is well-tailored to quick transitions and, although they are tempting at 17-10 in the double chance market, backing over 3.5 goals could be the better option.

Only three weeks in and this looks like being a high-scoring season - Man City's 3-1 win over Wolves last week set a Premier League record for a ten-match weekend with 44 goals converted.

And even in an ordinary campaign this fixture is renowned for its attacking quality with the last 11 meetings between the sides across all competitions producing an eye-watering 54 goals.

There is no indication that rate will slow down this week at Anfield, either, with a second-string Reds side having put seven past Lincoln in midweek after scoring six in their first two Premier League assignments.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have a devastating front three in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, new boy Willian and Alexandre Lacazette, who has been in top form with four goals in his last six league matches.

Given their recent resurgence, Arsenal look a touch overpriced to start a campaign with three successive wins for the first time since 2004-05 but a safer alternative given Liverpool's astonishing home run is to bet on there being at least four goals in a potential classic on Merseyside.

Key stat

Liverpool have won 26 of their last 27 Premier League home games.
