Liverpool put their disappointing week behind them with a 2-1 home win over Wolves on Sunday that restored their advantage over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

The Gunners had reduced the margin with their 2-0 Saturday success at Leicester, putting pressure on the Reds after their FA Cup exit to Championship side Plymouth and their 2-2 draw in a fiery midweek derby against Everton.

Arne Slot's side were 1-4 to chalk up their 18th win in 25 league matches this season and they looked good in the early stages as Luis Diaz bundled home the opener after just 15 minutes. Diaz was brought down for a Liverpool penalty which Mohamed Salah chipped home after 37 minutes and it could have been more as Salah had a goal ruled out for a tight offside, while a decision to award the Reds a second penalty was rightly overturned by VAR.

The leaders went into their shells after the break though, with Wolves growing into the game and they scored the best goal of the match as Matheus Cunha curled in a beauty to score for the third successive game after 67 minutes.

Liverpool held on but will need to raise their game for a tricky sequence of league games over the next ten days. Slot's side are 5-6 to beat Aston Villa in the Midlands on Wednesday and establish a ten-point lead over the Gunners. They follow that with a visit to champions Manchester City next Sunday and an Anfield clash with Newcastle on February 26.

The Reds are 2-7 to win the title in Slot's first season, with Arsenal out from 3-1 to 100-30.

Wolves showed enough to suggest they can be hopeful of staying out of the bottom three, although their 16th defeat of the season left them just two points ahead of 18th-placed Ipswich.

Tottenham improved their lowly position with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in London to move up to 12th. Spurs went ahead through a James Maddison goal after 13 minutes, and they held on to claim a vital victory over the Red Devils who slip to 15th.
