Match preview

Manchester United followed up their impressive 2-1 Premier League win over Liverpool with a less convincing 1-0 success at Southampton on Saturday and Erik ten Hag's men have a decent chance of completing a hat-trick of victories when they travel to troubled Leicester.

It is too early to start talking about the Red Devils' resurgence but, having started his reign with a 2-1 home defeat to Brighton and a humiliating 4-0 loss at Brentford, Ten Hag should be feeling a little more secure in the Old Trafford hotseat.

The same cannot be said of his opposite number Brendan Rodgers at Leicester, although the Foxes boss has already upset the odds once this week.

Rodgers was trading at odds-on in the sack-race betting before Scott Parker's departure from Bournemouth on Tuesday but he remains under pressure after a poor start to the season and a frustrating summer in the transfer market.

Centre-back Wesley Fofana is poised to complete his long-awaited move to Chelsea and his exit will do little to enhance the Foxes' feeble defensive record.

Fofana broke his leg in a pre-season friendly in August 2021 and Leicester ended up conceding 59 goals in 38 league matches – six more than relegated Burnley.

They have started the 2022-23 campaign in similar fashion, blowing a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home to Brentford, losing 4-2 at Arsenal and letting slip another lead in a 2-1 loss to Southampton at the King Power Stadium.

Last weekend Leicester were unable to take advantage of Conor Gallagher's 28th-minute red card for Chelsea as Raheem Sterling's brace gave the ten-man Blues a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge and backing United to win and both teams to score looks the best angle in a difficult betting heat.

Leicester's title-winning goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has departed for Nice and his successor Danny Ward may have a busy evening as United bid to follow up their wins over Liverpool and Southampton.

Winger Antony, set to arrive from Ajax, is not yet available but Ten Hag still has some selection issues with Casemiro pushing for a start in midfield after coming off the bench for his debut at St Mary's.

Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo were left out of the 11 for United's last two wins and left-back Luke Shaw has not featured since being substituted with his side trailing 4-0 to Brentford at half-time.

Ten Hag may not make significant changes to the side who snapped a seven-game losing streak away from home at Southampton although the Saints had 17 shots to United's 11 on Saturday.

That suggests Leicester, who have failed to score in only one of their last 15 home league matches, should get chances but their creaky defence means they are unlikely to upset the visitors.
