Everton vs Southampton predictions

It’s not over until the Grand Old Lady sings.

Everton's men side will play their 2,789th and final game at Goodison Park today as they host Southampton in a lunchtime kick-off.

There will be an emotional farewell as the Toffees prepare for their switch to their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, while the women's side will use Goodison.

They could not have asked for a much easier final fixture at their famous old ground than hosting Southampton, who have had a dismal Premier League campaign.

The Saints have won just two games all season, losing 28 of their 36 matches, and have only just surpassed Derby’s record-lowest points total of 11 after their shock 0-0 home draw with Manchester City last weekend.

Simon Rusk is their third manager of the season, and their leaky defence - which has conceded 82 goals - could crumble in front of a fervent Goodison faithful.

Everton have only lost three of their last 13 Premier League games, and they were narrow defeats to Liverpool, City and Chelsea.

The Toffees have drawn a league-high 15 games but they were impressive in a 3-1 victory over Fulham last weekend and have now scored five times in their last two outings.

David Moyes returned in January and managed to steady the ship and prevent relegation, although turning a few more of those stalemates into victories could have led to a top-half finish.

The Toffees should be able to capitalise on what should be a passionate home atmosphere and secure a 1,538th victory at Goodison.

Southampton have just one clean sheet from 18 away games this season and, although they have steadied the ship somewhat under caretaker boss Rusk, the weight of history could be too much to handle.

Twenty-one of the Saints’ 28 defeats have also gone over 2.5 goals and, from the small recent sample size, final games at stadiums are high-scoring.

Arsenal beat Wigan 4-2 in their last game at Highbury, West Ham were 3-2 winners over Manchester United in their Boleyn Ground swansong and Tottenham were 2-1 victors in their final match at White Hart Lane over the Red Devils.

The Grand Old Lady will let out one final roar and the Everton faithful should be sent home happy with a high-scoring win.
