Match preview

Everton kick off the Premier League weekend as evens favourites for a home win over West Ham – the same price as their manager Marco Silva is to be the next top-flight boss to leave his position.

The Toffees’ pursuit of former Watford coach Silva was a protracted and acrimonious saga and their fans may be reflecting that it was hardly worth the effort given that they sit 18th in the table after eight games of the 2019-20 season.

Everton had been jostling for favouritism with Leicester and Wolves in the ante-post betting without the big six and they started the campaign in solid fashion with a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace and a 1-0 home win over Watford.

Those shutouts extended their defensive record to ten clean sheets in 13 league games but they have conceded 13 goals in six top-flight matches since then, losing five of them.

Everton put in a spirited performance in a 3-1 home defeat to Manchester City but that did little to placate fans dissatisfied by 2-0 losses to promoted pair Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

The Toffees went into the international break – a dangerous time for under-pressure Premier League managers – with a scrappy 1-0 defeat at Burnley.

Seamus Coleman was sent off for two yellow cards at Turf Moor and the skipper is banned for the clash with West Ham, further unsettling a struggling home defence.

Michael Keane was dropped for England’s game against Bulgaria after a poor display in the defeat to the Czech Republic and he and his fellow defenders face a dangerous West Ham side.

The Hammers reminded punters yet again that they are a team to avoid at short prices when losing at home to Palace before the international break.

However, given their attacking options and the tense atmosphere expected among the home fans, the 3-1 about a Hammers victory looks too big to ignore.

Declan Rice and Mark Noble provide a solid base in midfield and a possible front four of Andriy Yarmolenko, Manuel Lanzini, Felipe Anderson and striker Sebastien Haller looks at least as strong as Everton’s attacking options.

They started the season with a 5-0 home drubbing by champions City but Haller (four league goals) and Yarmolenko (three) have helped them to wins over Watford, Norwich and Manchester United.

Hammers fans know their team remain capable of the odd stinker – they were stuffed 4-0 at League One Oxford in the EFL Cup – but they should also trouble most opposition defences.

They won 3-1 at Goodison last season, with Yarmolenko scoring twice, and Everton boss Silva should be wary of a repeat performance from the Irons.

Key stat

West Ham have won three and drawn three of their last six away games in the Premier League.
