Preview

It’s all coming good for Manchester United at home and abroad, although a return to the scene of one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s lowest points as manager may see their progress halted.

The short hop up to Goodison Park will bring back miserable memories for Solskjaer of the day in April when Everton trounced United 4-0.

It was a complete no-show from the Red Devils on one of Marco Silva’s better days as Toffees’ chief.

Everton are now in the more than capable hands of Carlo Ancelotti, a man who has taken no time at all to breathe some form into the Blues.

A five-game unbeaten run was ended lucklessly at Arsenal last Sunday when they continued to look a threat but still in need of some remedial work in defence.

The pace of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was a constant headache for Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate, who need to communicate more if they are to be Ancelotti’s chosen two.

Whoever runs the home rearguard will be delighted to see that Marcus Rashford isn’t involved and nor is Anthony Martial, leaving Solskjaer with a selection headache of his own.

Odion Ighalo, seemingly a panic deadline-day signing whose eventual arrival from China was met with little enthusiasm, grabbed his first United goal in Thursday’s 5-0 rout of Club Brugge in the Europa League and that may well be good enough to earn him his first Premier League start.

That Brugge romp was unquestionably a big moment for United as it saw them into the last 16 of a competition they are now favourites to win. But it was against a Belgian side hit by injuries, not in sparkling form and down to ten men after 22 minutes.

This should be altogether different. Just five points separate Everton from United in the table and the hosts have players to ruffle the feathers of Harry Maguire and chums.

Ancelotti is getting a tune out of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin and turning them into a strike pairing. The Toffees fired off 17 shots at the Emirates last weekend when they were unfortunate to lose.

United have kept six clean sheets in their last seven games and are unbeaten in seven, so will represent a tough obstacle for Everton to overcome.

But Everton have lost only once at home in all competitions since the September and confidence is high.

They boast a midfield who can compete with Fred and Nemanja Matic and get to grips with Bruno Fernandes who looks a really astute signing.

It should be tight – far tighter than the previous meeting at Goodison – but the hosts get the nod, especially having had a few extra days off.

The 23-20 that Everton score a first-half goal is a bet with the stats on its side. They have netted in the first half of each of their last six matches, scoring eight goals in total.

Key stat

Everton have scored first-half goals in each of their last six matches.
