Match preview

The apprentice upstaged his master when Frank Lampard's Chelsea drubbed Carlo Ancelotti's Everton in March and the outcome may well be the same when they cross paths again, this time at Goodison.

Mason Mount opened the scoring in a 4-0 Chelsea romp on that occasion and all the signs point towards another Blues success.

A crowd of 2,000 will hope to give the Toffees something of an edge but those numbers probably won't be influential enough to stop Chelsea extending their unbeaten away record this season to ten matches in all competitions.

The two sides appear to be going in different directions for now, hence the odds-on quotes about Lampard's visitors winning on Merseyside.

Chelsea backers looking to squeeze a bit more out of the game might prefer to back the away side to win in a game containing at least two goals at 21-20. After all, Everton's five home games this term have produced 22 goals (4.4 per game) and they haven't kept a clean sheet at home in nine Premier League outings while only champions Liverpool have scored more league goals than Chelsea.

Lampard enjoyed one of the best seasons of his playing career under Ancelotti when Chelsea won the double in 2009-10.

The midfielder finished that season with 22 goals, fifth in the Golden Boot race, while Ancelotti would eventually leave the Bridge with the third-highest win percentage in Premier League history.

Lampard has nothing but respect for the Italian, who has his work cut out breathing life back into the Toffees.

Exemplary at the start of the season when they won their first four matches and were top after five, they went into this round of fixtures in ninth spot with just one win in their last seven. And that was at Fulham.

They have lost their last two at home – against Manchester United and Leeds – failing to score either time. And if Chelsea keep a lid on poacher extraordinaire, 14-goal Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it's hard to pinpoint where the home goals are going to come from.

James Rodriguez is out and that Everton defence which was highlighted as a weakness before the season started is proving as unreliable as many suspected it would.

Going into this weekend only three top-flight clubs had shipped more goals and if they give space to the likes of Timo Werner, Mason Mount or Christian Pulisic, or allow Reece James and Ben Chilwell to maraud down the flanks and continue to ping in crosses, they will get unlocked.

Key stat

Everton have conceded at least two goals in five of their last six home league games.
