Match preview

Crystal Palace ended Manchester United's nine-game winning streak in Wednesday's 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park and, three days later, the Eagles host Newcastle, another of the Premier League's in-form teams.

Palace needed a late Michael Olise free-kick to earn a point against United in an even encounter that belied the fact that Patrick Vieira's men had lost their previous three home matches, to Southampton, Tottenham and Fulham, by an aggregate score of 9-1.

With attacking talents such as Olise, Wilfried Zaha and Eberechi Eze, the Eagles should soon pull clear of the relegation zone although they may struggle to crack a Newcastle defence who have conceded only 11 goals in 19 league matches.

That is the best record in the top flight and it explains why Eddie Howe's men have lost only once in the league this season, going down to a 97th-minute goal against Liverpool at Anfield in August.

Newcastle had a slice of luck in last weekend's home game against Fulham when Aleksandar Mitrovic's penalty was disallowed as he had kicked the ball into his standing leg.

However, the Cottagers could have few complaints about their 1-0 defeat given that they did not manage another shot on target and Newcastle racked up 20 efforts at goal.

The Magpies have not been as fluent as they were in the autumn since returning from the World Cup break but their defensive standards are as high as ever.

They have kept clean sheets in all six of their league and EFL Cup matches, including a hard-fought 0-0 draw at leaders Arsenal, and the only blot on their record was a shock 2-1 defeat at League One Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup third round.

These teams have already met twice at St James' Park this season and both games, in the league in September and the EFL Cup in November, ended goalless. The league fixture was an entertaining stalemate, with Palace having nine of the 15 shots on target in the match, while Newcastle progressed on penalties in the cup tie.

Under 2.5 goals is no bigger than 8-11 but it may pay to back a 1-0 Newcastle victory, a scoreline that has copped in three of their last eight matches in all competitions.

Bruno Guimaraes misses out for the Magpies and his absence would rob them of some midfield craft but their progress under Howe has been a team effort and Palace, beaten to nil in five of their last nine league fixtures, may come up short again.
