Chelsea and Liverpool are two of English football's heavyweights but are both seeking a response to recent Premier League setbacks as they prepare to face each other at Stamford Bridge.

However, they had contrasting fortunes in the midweek Champions League games with Liverpool losing 1-0 away to Galatasaray and Chelsea winning 1-0 at home to Benfica.

Chelsea vs Liverpool preview

Arne Slot's Liverpool were labelled a machine as they cruised to the 2024-25 Premier League title but they have malfunctioned in recent games and they might not be fixed in time for the trip to Chelsea.

The Merseysiders have splashed out on some expensively acquired parts, including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, who arrived on Merseyside for a combined outlay of £241 million, but they dropped their first Premier League points last weekend with a 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace and were beaten by Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday with Victor Osimhen's penalty sealing a 1-0 success for the Turkish side.

Despite the downturn in results, Liverpool remain top of the table, but the majority of their performances have lacked conviction and the markets have reacted with Arsenal overtaking them in the title betting.

Until recently, Slot's team were receiving praise of sorts as a side which knew how to win without playing well and their fixture against Chelsea could be another moment where the result is seen as far more important than the performance.

But Liverpool's loss to Galatasaray was especially painful because it was accompanied by injuries to Alisson and Hugo Ekitike, who have been two of their better players.

Ekitike became an instant fan favourite with a goal and an assist in the 4-2 victory at home to Bournemouth and has continued to impress with five goals scored in nine appearances.

His injury could be a key moment for Isak, who has understandably struggled for form and fitness after a non-existent pre-season.

Despite the issues over Isak and Wirtz, Liverpool have averaged two goals per Premier League game and they are capable of causing problems for Chelsea, who had been talked up as ante-post title contenders but have been sucked towards mid-table after taking one point from their last three Premier League games.

Injuries have been piling up for the Blues, who will be forced into another defensive rejig with Trevoh Chalobah serving a one-match suspension.

Chalobah played an important role in Tuesday's 1-0 victory at home to Benfica, but Chelsea were far from fluent against the Portuguese side, who outshot them 9-8 and the Blues were fortunate to claim maximum points.

Offensively, the Blues are finding life harder without Cole Palmer, who is nursing a persistent groin injury and expected to be absent for a fourth successive game.

And a general lack of discipline has been an issue in the Premier League with red cards impacting on the recent losses away to Manchester United (1-2) and at home to Brighton (1-3).

There are similarities between Chelsea and Liverpool at a stage of the season when it would be unrealistic to expect stellar performances and as a consequence this fixture could be evenly-contested with a share of the points seen as an acceptable outcome for both camps.

Caicedo could be cautioned

There should be plenty of edge to the midfield exchanges and that won't concern Moises Caicedo, who enjoys the physical side of the game. The Ecuadorean was booked in 11 Premier League games last season and looks overpriced for a card against the team he turned down in favour of a move to Stamford Bridge.

Suspect defences could be exposed

Chelsea and Liverpool are going through a tough time but they could still serve up plenty of entertainment in their evening encounter. The Blues have netted in seven successive matches, while Liverpool had been on an 18-game scoring streak until their 1-0 loss away to Galatasaray. Both teams could fight fire with fire and the upshot may be a high-scoring draw.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Bet Builder

Mohamed Salah to score anytime

The Egyptian has made a quiet start to the season but is a big game player and could make his mark against his former club.

Pedro Neto to score or assist anytime

Chelsea will be looking for opportunities on the counter-attack and are sure to search out Pedro Neto, who has the pace and skill to cause Liverpool problems.

Over 2.5 goals

Neither team has looked convincing at the back so it makes sense to anticipate a high-scoring outcome.
