Chelsea vs Aston Villa predictions

Chelsea are emerging as surprise Premier League title contenders under Enzo Maresca's stewardship and the Blues can heap the misery on Aston Villa, who are struggling to balance their Champions League commitments with domestic duties.

Many questioned the decision to give Maresca a chance after his title-winning season in the Championship with Leicester but he has justified the appointment, taking 22 points from 12 games to have the Blues firmly in the top-four mix.

Chelsea have a bloated squad but the Italian has been able to get the best out of a core group of players and a side that were serially underachieving now look on the up.

Chelsea’s only two defeats this season have come against Liverpool and Manchester City and they have been pretty efficient at Stamford Bridge, recording wins over Brighton and Newcastle either side of a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Striker Nicolas Jackson is starting to live up to his promise, with seven goals in 12 league starts, and talisman Cole Palmer is thriving with being given the licence to roam.

Being involved in the Conference League is of no issue to Chelsea as Maresca is regularly resting his star assets - he made ten changes to his starting line-up for Thursday's win at Heidenheim - and this looks like the perfect time to be hosting Villa, who are failing to live up to expectations after a landmark season last term.

Unai Emery’s side were fully deserving of their fourth-placed finish last season but the strains of a European campaign are taking their toll and they have won only five of their opening 12 league games.

In fact, Villa are winless in seven matches in all competitions and they have been comfortably beaten 4-1 at Tottenham and 2-0 at Liverpool in their last two away league trips.

Wednesday’s goalless draw at home to Juventus in the Champions League was the third time in their last four starts in which they have failed to score and they have plenty to prove at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea are unbeaten in nine.

Villa have taken only seven points from their last seven matches, leaving them 16th in the current form table, while only leaders Liverpool have collected more points than Chelsea since the start of May, with the Blues winning 11 of their last 17 top-flight fixtures.

Key stat

Aston Villa have won only one of their last seven Premier League matches.
