Match preview

Chelsea's charge up the Premier League table was halted by a tactical 0-0 draw at home to Tottenham last Saturday but they were emphatic 4-0 winners at Sevilla on Wednesday and can follow up by defeating Leeds at Stamford Bridge.

Solid defence has underpinned a lot of Chelsea's recent improvement with clean sheets kept in eight of their last ten games, but they may have to rely on their star-studded attack against Leeds, who have scored in each of their five away matches this season.

Chelsea are growing accustomed to coming up against massed defences and were given huge respect by Spurs, who kept a disciplined shape.

They will be posed a different set of problems by Leeds, who play with the same ambition and intensity whoever the opponents.

Marcelo Bielsa's side were involved in two seven-goal thrillers at the start of the season, losing 4-3 at Liverpool and winning 4-3 at home to Fulham.

More recently they have achieved back-to-back shutouts by drawing 0-0 with Arsenal and winning 1-0 at Everton but little has changed in terms of their approach.

Against Arsenal they were denied three times by the woodwork but they might have lost had Bukayo Saka made the most of a one-on-one opportunity.

They were equally forward-thinking against Everton and collected maximum points thanks to Raphinha's superb 79th-minute goal.

But the scoreline did scarce justice to the overall entertainment value after a pulsating game featuring 38 shots, 23 of them by Leeds.

A return to more high-scoring outcomes seems likely and the goals could flow at Stamford Bridge.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have shipped at least three goals in four of their ten fixtures and their high line could be ruthlessly exposed by the Blues.

Frank Lampard made nine changes for the trip to Sevilla, including a recall for Olivier Giroud, who netted all four goals in a victory which clinched first place in Group E.

Giroud could have an important role to play in the Premier League, especially when Chelsea come up against teams who would rather sit deep and accept the downside of defending a lot of crosses into the box.

But Leeds do things differently with their pressing game so Lampard may persist with the pace and athleticism of Tammy Abraham.

Lampard has Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi pushing to get back into his Premier League starting line-up and, given the depth and quality of his attacking resources, it is easy to see why Chelsea are considered serious title challengers.

Chelsea doubters might point out that the Londoners have failed to win three of five home league matches this season.

However, the Blues have the potential to put together a string of home victories and can make a start with a high-scoring success this weekend.

Key stat

Leeds have scored in their last eight away games.
