Match preview

Injury-hit Tottenham are going through a miserable period and are unlikely to be afforded any respite at Turf Moor, where Burnley look value to take the three points.

Despite back-to-back Premier League defeats, Spurs are only five points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea and remain in the race for Champions League qualification.

But they have played more like relegation candidates in recent weeks and crashed out of the FA Cup with a penalty-shootout loss at home to Norwich in Wednesday's fifth-round tie.

Spurs are still in the Champions League but are as big as 9-2 to qualify from their last-16 tie against Leipzig (they trail 1-0 after the first leg in north London) and are heading for a 12th consecutive trophyless campaign.

The mood around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is getting toxic and Eric Dier responded to the wrath of one supporter after the Norwich game by climbing into the stands to confront him.

Dier is the subject of an FA investigation, putting him in the same situation as Dele Alli is for a social-media post, and causing yet another problem for manager Jose Mourinho.

Aside from awaiting possible punishments for Dier and Alli, the Portuguese is having to manage an injury crisis which denies him the services of his captain Hugo Lloris, his most reliable midfielder Moussa Sissoko, and leading scorers Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane.

Mourinho hasn't got every decision right and he made a costly error in midweek by selecting Michel Vorm ahead of Paulo Gazzaniga as Lloris's replacement.

However, given the cards he has been dealt, it is going to be difficult to salvage anything from a season which is fast becoming a write-off.

It is all a far cry from the positive start to Mourinho's tenure which included a convincing 5-0 home victory over Burnley.

That was Burnley's heaviest loss of the campaign and featured a goal-of-the-season contender from Son, who ran almost the entire length of the pitch before slotting past Nick Pope.

Burnley will not have forgotten the experience and will relish the chance to exact revenge.

After beginning 2020 with defeats at home to Aston Villa (2-1) and away to Chelsea (3-0), the Clarets were 15th and far from out of the relegation reckoning.

But the mood changed with a come-from-behind 2-1 success at home to Leicester and Burnley can approach this game with the aim of extending a six-game Premier League unbeaten run.

Two more points will take Sean Dyche's men to the 40-point survival target and there is a realistic prospect of them mounting a push towards European qualification.

Whatever transpires Burnley are likely to stick to their tried-and-trusted methods which make them hard to watch and very difficult to play against.

Aside from talented winger Dwight McNeil there is little flair in the side, but few teams take care of the basics better than Burnley and the basics may be all they need to expose a tired and disjointed Spurs.

Key stat

Tottenham have kept two clean sheets in their last 19 matches.
