Match preview
After a promising end to last season, Southampton have kicked off their 2020-21 campaign with three straight defeats but they can stop the rot with victory over injury-hit Burnley at Turf Moor.
Saints lost their opening Premier League game of the season 1-0 to Crystal Palace in a match of few chances at Selhurst Park, before an EFL Cup defeat at home to Brentford and a 5-2 walloping by Tottenham.
Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane exposed Southampton's high defensive line to devastating effect after Danny Ings had put the hosts in front.
However, Ralph Hasenhuttl's defenders should have a more comfortable 90 minutes against a Burnley side whose injury problems show no sign of easing.
Sean Dyche's men, missing first-choice centre-backs Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, were beaten 4-2 at Leicester in their first league game of the season and lost striker Jay Rodriguez to injury during the midweek EFL Cup win at Millwall.
Forward Ashley Barnes and midfielder Jack Cork are also key absentees and Dyche has not been able to significantly strengthen his squad during the summer.
Both of these sides finished last season strongly. Burnley clinched tenth place after losing only two of their last 16 league matches while Saints, unbeaten in their last seven, were two points behind in 11th.
Hasenhuttl's men were more effective away from St Mary's than they were on their own patch for much of the season and that points to a bet on the visitors at Turf Moor.
Since their 3-0 defeat away to Burnley on the opening day of last season, Southampton have scored in all but two of their 23 road trips and former Clarets striker Ings gives them a real cutting edge up front.
Only Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy scored more goals than Ings's 22 in the league last season and his opener against Spurs last weekend was another confident, sharp finish.
Southampton have plenty of craft in midfield to create chances for Ings and strike partner Che Adams and Burnley's lack of pace means the Saints defence should bounce back from their horror show against Spurs.
Key stat
Southampton have failed to score in just two of their last 23 away matches in all competitions.
