Match preview

While plenty of attention will be fixed on the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, Burnley's home game against Everton is likely to have a huge bearing on the Premier League relegation picture.

A win for the Clarets at Turf Moor would be only their fourth league triumph of the campaign but it would give Sean Dyche's side a fighting chance and leave the Toffees' place in the top flight in great peril.

Alternatively, if Everton can arrest some appalling away form and somehow muster a victory, they would be six points ahead of third-from-bottom Watford and the situation would look a whole lot rosier.

So huge prizes are available with a win in this match. The only problem is, it is hard to make a strong case for either team actually getting it.

Earlier Covid outbreaks mean Burnley have been playing catch-up with the fixture list for some time and they seemed to be making progress a few weeks ago when they won with a commanding performance at Brighton and then boosted their confidence by seeing off Champions League-chasing Tottenham.

However, those successes have not been built upon and while a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace looks a decent result, that point came courtesy of a Luka Milivojevic own goal and they haven't scored in their four games since.

Consequently, Frank Lampard's Everton are presented with a great opportunity but it is no given that a team who have earned just two points from their last 12 away games will be able to take advantage.

That is maybe a hangover from Rafa Benitez's ill-fated time at the helm - he left shortly after what seemed the nadir of a 2-1 defeat at bottom-of-the-table Norwich - but there has been no sign of an improvement as they have conceded 12 goals in their four league away games under their new gaffer.

None of Lampard's January additions have had a galvanising effect - it is difficult to see how Dele Alli's stock could have fallen further after a couple of miserable seasons at Spurs but he seems to have managed it - and they may not be able to stand up to a physical battle without suspended defender Michael Keane.

But this promises to be a nervy contest between two teams with little creative spark.

Quotes of 4-6 about there being fewer than three goals would be of interest to some, but one or both teams not finding the net appears attractive at 10-11.

Victory would be great, but defeat does not bear thinking about so neither side may prove that adventurous.
