Brentford vs Chelsea preview

Chelsea have started the Premier League season with three London derbies and they get set for another short trip across the capital to face Brentford, who look a declining force following Thomas Frank’s departure to Tottenham.

The Bees have also seen star forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa make big-money moves to Manchester United and Newcastle, as well as losing the services of captain Christian Norgaard to Arsenal, so it is no surprise that a season of struggle is anticipated.

Rookie manager Keith Andrews did mastermind a 1-0 win in Brentford's opening home league game against Aston Villa but that was sandwiched between defeats at Nottingham Forest and Sunderland – and now it gets much tougher.

Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph has inspired them in the early stages of the Premier League, with a goalless draw at Crystal Palace put firmly behind them with an emphatic 5-1 victory at West Ham and a more assured 2-0 win over neighbours Fulham.

Those two recent triumphs came despite missing talismanic figure Cole Palmer, who could be sidelined again, which shows they now have more strings to their bow with new signing Joao Pedro slotting in effortlessly following his four goal contributions in three outings.

Recent wing recruits Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Estevao will be keen to emulate Pedro in making their presence felt at Stamford Bridge and, with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez truly coming of age and dictating matters in midfield, the Blues should dominate all departments.

The Bees have scored in each of their three league matches but they have had only 24 shots in total and are looking much lighter in attack than in recent seasons.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are finding attacking rhythm and, along with leaders Liverpool and Crystal Palace, are one of only three clubs yet to lose this season.

The chances are coming freely, which bodes well given their attacking riches, and Chelsea look well-oiled defensively so should be well up to justifying odds-on favouritism.

World Cup winner Fernandez starting to blossom

Fernandez has taken time to find his feet in the Premier League but Chelsea are being rewarded for their patience and he has been involved in 14 goals in his last 18 appearances in all competitions for the Blues.

The Argentinian scored and assisted in the 2-0 win over Fulham and if Palmer isn’t fit to start as expected then he will be on penalty duty.

Set pieces could be key for the Bees

Brentford may have to make the most of set-pieces if they are to pick up a positive result and towering Dutch centre-back Sepp van den Berg will be a target from corners.

The 23-year-old had an effort on target from two shots in the 3-1 loss at Forest and he had eight efforts on target from inside the box in 31 league appearances last season.

Chelsea to win

Having taken seven points from three league games, Chelsea should have too much class for a Brentford side that have already been beaten by Nottingham Forest and Sunderland this season.

Joao Pedro to score or assist

Joao Pedro has shone in Cole Palmer's absence and his opening three Premier League appearances in Blue have seen him score twice and grab two assists.

Igor Thiago to be shown a card

Brentford may spend a lot of time out of possession and physical forward Igor Thiago, who has committed nine fouls in three league games and been booked twice, will have to press from the front.
