Team news

Brentford
Ivan Toney is available despite being charged over alleged breaches of the FA's betting rules. Aaron Hickey and Kristoffer Ajer remain out but Pontus Jansson is set to return.

Tottenham
World Cup winner Cristian Romero is unavailable and Hugo Lloris will be rested, so Fraser Forster should start in goal. Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur were injured in Qatar and Bentancur is serving a one-match ban in the Premier League. Ryan Sessegnon is a doubt but Ivan Perisic is available.

Match preview

Brentford defied odds of 19-1 to beat champions Manchester City in their final Premier League fixture before the World Cup break and the Bees can claim another big scalp when they resume their campaign at home to Tottenham.

A home victory over a depleted Spurs side would be a minor upset compared with the 2-1 win at City, where Ivan Toney scored both goals after his disappointing omission from England's World Cup squad.

Only one of the six Brentford players called up for the finals made it out of the group stage and that was goalkeeper David Raya, an unused substitute during Spain's run to the last 16.

It was a far more gruelling tournament for Tottenham's representatives. World Cup winner Cristian Romero will not feature at Brentford, while France captain Hugo Lloris, along with Ivan Perisic of third-placed Croatia, are set to start on the bench.

Brazil forward Richarlison and Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur picked up injuries in Qatar, while South Korea talisman Heung-Min Son played in a protective mask due to a fractured eye socket and Harry Kane missed a late penalty in England's 2-1 quarter-final defeat to France.

Speculation over Antonio Conte's long-term future at the club is also an unsettling factor for Tottenham, who had been in patchy form leading up to the World Cup.

Spurs lost four and won four of their last eight league matches before and, significantly, those defeats came against top-four rivals Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle and Liverpool.

Tottenham were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Nottingham Forest, who had eight shots on target to their opponents' two, and Conte's men also made hard work of several of their autumn victories.

They came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at relegation candidates Bournemouth, conceded first before beating Marseille 2-1 in a crucial Champions League group fixture, and needed a late brace from Bentancur to see off Leeds 4-3 at home in their most recent competitive outing.

While Spurs have first-team players returning in dribs and drabs, Brentford's injury problems have eased during the World Cup hiatus and Thomas Frank could name the same 11 who started November's win at City.

The Bees marked their Premier League debut with a home win over Arsenal on the opening day of the 2021-22 season and they have been impressive on their own patch this term too, thumping Manchester United 4-0 and Leeds 5-2, beating Brighton 2-0 and drawing 0-0 with Chelsea.

Spurs were held to a goalless draw in west London in April, when they failed to register a shot on target and Toney hit the woodwork twice, and they look uneasy favourites at Brentford this time around.
