Bournemouth vs Aston Villa predictions
The battle for Champions League qualification is intensifying as the Premier League reaches its final three-match stretch and a run of seven wins in their last nine top-flight fixtures has made Aston Villa hopeful that they can still secure the top-five finish that is required.
The Villans dug deep to see off Fulham in a 1-0 win at home last weekend and had reeled off three straight road wins over Brentford, Brighton and Southampton before succumbing to an injury-time goal from Matheus Nunes in defeat at Manchester City.
Unai Emery’s side are rising to the challenge but opponents Bournemouth still have outside hopes of breaking into Europe and last Saturday’s come-from-behind 2-1 win at Arsenal has only fuelled the fire.
Bournemouth have won just one of their last six Premier League home games and the underlying numbers tell the tale of a side starting to feel exhaustion at the end of a busy campaign.
However, that victory at the Emirates stretched the Cherries’ unbeaten run in the league to five and the way in which they finished that contest should snub the idea that they are a team on the decline.
It makes for an intriguing fixture and, with so much attacking talent on show, goals are expected to flow.
Both teams have scored in seven of Bournemouth’s last nine league games and in Antoine Semenyo, Justin Kluivert and Evanilson they have the forward options to put Villa to the sword.
Meanwhile, the only time Villa have failed to score in their last 19 matches in all competitions came in their 3-0 FA Cup semi-final reverse to Crystal Palace and they have netted at least twice in 12 of those matches, including against Liverpool, Paris St-Germain, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Brighton.
Being without the creative services of the ever-present Youri Tielemans is a big blow to manager Emery but they can still make their presence felt with Morgan Rogers and Jacob Ramsey offering their energy and support to Ollie Watkins.
The best approach may be to back the second half to feature at least two goals, something which has happened in the last four Premier League meetings between the sides.
When these teams drew 1-1 at Villa Park in October, Evanilson’s injury-time goal cancelled out Ross Barkley’s 76th-minute opener and late goals have been a common theme for Bournemouth this season.
The Cherries scored twice in the final 23 minutes to land the spoils at Arsenal and they have scored more goals in second-half stoppage time than any other team in the Premier League this season with eight.
Bournemouth’s 35 league games have featured 97 goals and 58 of those have come in the second half while Villa are also not shy of late drama.
Emery’s men have scored 33 of their 55 league goals in the second period and five of their last six away games have seen at least two second-half goals. That trend may continue in a must-win encounter for both sides at the Vitality Stadium.
