Aston Villa will be looking for their first Premier League win of the season when they take on Fulham at Villa Park on Sunday.

Unai Emery's side got off the mark with a 1-0 victory over Bologna in the Europa League on Thursday, but they have scored just one goal in their five league games and they take on a Fulham side who have won their last three matches, the most recent success coming in the EFL Cup against Cambridge United.

However, the Londoners have won just once in their last 21 visits to Villa, so they will be keen to improve upon that poor record in Sunday's showdown.

Aston Villa vs Fulham preview

Having reached the quarter-finals of last season's Champions League and been made favourites for this term's Europa, few Aston Villa followers would have anticipated that their team would be still searching for a first Premier League win after five matches.

Achievements inevitably raise expectations but financial restrictions have meant a lack of clout in the transfer market and it seems Unai Emery's side have been unable to push on as a result.

History suggests they should fancy their chances of getting up and running against Fulham, who have won just once in 21 visits to Villa Park since 1973.

But Villa have scored just once this season and are not creating many chances. That alone should have alarm bells ringing in the Holte End, even if the Villans did get this season's European adventure off to a winning start on Wednesday night.

Their expected-goals (xG) figures make for dismal reading. Their highest figure in their five league games was 1.2 in a 1-0 loss at Brentford, and while they tallied 1.6 against Bologna in midweek, almost half of that was accounted for by Ollie Watkins' missed penalty.

So they may have to scrap for any rewards against Fulham, especially as the Cottagers are also struggling in the final third.

Fulham have won their last two league games against Leeds and Brentford and progressed past Cambridge in the EFL Cup. But their xG figures in their last three league outings – they lost 2-0 at Chelsea at the start of that run – are just 0.9, 0.9 and 1.0.

The latter figure came in last weekend's 3-1 win over the Bees in which they benefited from an Ethan Pinnock own goal, so they are hardly firing on all cylinders.

Such statistics suggest that while there is certainly enough talent in the Villa ranks for them to push up the table, it could take time for them to get into their stride.

Both they and the Cottagers, whose win over League One Cambridge came courtesy of a single goal, are difficult to trust and it is no surprise to see the draw shorter than 2-1 in places.

It would be a leap of faith to suggest that both could get their act together on the same afternoon. One may fire and the other not, so backing one or both teams to not score could be profitable.

Cash could fall foul of the officials again

Matty Cash scored Villa's first goal of the season at Sunderland last week, but it has also been noticeable that he has had the odd brush with referees this term.

The Poland international was cautioned in a 3-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace and goalless draw at Everton, before three fouls saw him earn another yellow against Bologna on Wednesday.

Strikers could be in for a frustrating afternoon

It is the lack of chances that both Aston Villa and Fulham are creating that will be of the gravest concern to the two managers and this match could descend into a battle where the teams cancel each other out.

With neither having shown the potential to go on a scoring spree, there looks a decent chance that neither team will be able to find the net, so it could be worth chancing that we do not see a successful strike at Villa Park.

Under 2.5 goals

Just one of Villa's last 11 games has featured more than two goals and one of Fulham's last six, so goals may be at a premium.

Sasa Lukic to be booked

No Premier League player went into this weekend having conceded more fouls than the Cottagers' combative midfielder.

Aston Villa to have most corners

Despite failing to score in two home games, Villa have forced a total of 13 corners and could come out on top of the flag-kick count.
