Nottingham Forest took action over the international break – replacing Nuno Espirito Santo with Ange Postecoglou – and they face a tough test on the resumption with a daunting fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Tricky Trees concluded a mixed set of August results with a 3-0 defeat at home to West Ham and are two points adrift of third-placed Arsenal, who are keen to respond after their 1-0 loss at Liverpool.

Arsenal vs Nottingham Forest preview

Mikel Arteta had the edge over Ange Postecoglou in north London derbies and he can ruin the Australian's return to the dugout by steering Arsenal to a third league win of the season.

Postecoglou has earned a reputation as trophy winner and will be fondly remembered by Tottenham fans as the man who ended the club's 17-year-wait for silverware.

However, he also presided over their lowest finish (17th) and points tally (38) of the Premier League era and paid the price when he was relieved of his duties just 16 days after leading the club to Europa League glory.

Appointing Postecoglou could be seen as a gamble by Nottingham Forest, because he inherits a team which had been making huge progress.

Nuno took on the Forest job in December 2023 with the club in the thick of a relegation battle.

Less than one-and-a-half years later he steered them to a sixth-place finish, but the achievement never seemed to be fully appreciated by owner Evangelos Marinakis, who seems more concerned with the late-season dip in results which ended dreams of Champions League football.

However, Marinakis has undoubtedly invested heavily into the team and is looking for Forest's upward trajectory to continue.

Postecoglou will be aware of the need to manage expectations and a busy fixture schedule, although he deserves credit for thrusting himself into the fray for such a difficult opening game.

Arsenal's 100 per cent start to the season came to an end with a moment of magic from Dominik Szoboszlai, but there is a generally positive vibe among Gunners fans eager to see the fruits of a team bolstered by the long-awaited acquisition of an established centre-forward.

Victor Gyokeres had a dream home debut, bagging a brace in the 5-0 win over Leeds, and looks ready to provide the focal point which Arsenal have sorely missed.

As well as lacking a natural number nine, Arsenal had often seemed over reliant on Bukayo Saka for an offensive spark.

But Arsenal have addressed the issue with the signings of Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze and they may see the benefits this weekend because their new-look attack looks too hot to handle.

Given the Gunners' attacking threats, there is an obvious need for Forest to be organised and fully focused.

And the scale of the task will not be lost on Postecoglou, who managed Tottenham in four north London derbies and collected just one point from a possible 12.

The 60-year-old is unlikely to change too much of Nuno's framework in the short term and his team look set for a low-scoring defeat.

Gibbs-White may get into trouble

Morgan Gibbs-White and Ange Postecoglou could have gone in opposite directions if the 25-year-old's much talked about move to Tottenham had gone ahead.

However, Gibbs-White has looked fully invested in the Nottingham Forest cause and his over eagerness to impress the new manager could lead to multiple fouls being committed against the Gunners.

Forest could fire blanks

Arsenal had a purple patch against Leeds, scoring four goals in the middle third of the game, but they have been unspectacular in other moments and may have to grind out a victory over Nottingham Forest, who will be fired up by their new manager.

The Gunners have kept clean sheets in each of their last two home games and they can shut out the Tricky Trees, who have failed to score in three of their previous four trips to the stadium.

One or both teams not to score

Postecoglou likes his teams to attack but Ange-ball is unlikely to be evident just yet from Nottingham Forest, who could fail to score for a second successive game.

Noni Madueke to score or assist

Madueke should be brimming with confidence after excelling for England and could have a key role to play in breaking Forest's resistance.

Elliot Anderson to be carded

Anderson delivered a couple of strong performances in England colours, but he walks a fine line with some of his tackling and can enter the book at the Emirates.
