Verdict

The battle to avoid relegation from the top flight looks to be one of the most competitive in years with only six points separating the bottom seven teams as the top flight gets ready to resume.

Wolves, advised at 11-2 in the Big Kick-Off, are currently bottom of the pile having taken just ten points and scored eight goals from their first 15 games. New boss Julen Lopetegui clearly has a tough job on his hands to steer the Wanderers to safety in the second half of the campaign.

Wolves were not the only side to opt for a change at the top as Nathan Jones replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl in the Southampton hotseat. The Saints resume second bottom of the standings with 12 points.

Gary O’Neil has been handed the reins at Bournemouth on a permanent basis after taking temporary charge after Scott Parker’s sacking and there has also been a change in the Cherries’ boardroom after an American consortium headed by Bill Foley completed a takeover of the club earlier this month.

Despite the promise of investment, Bournemouth remain odds-on for relegation, which is in no small part down to the fact that they boast the worst defensive record in the division.

Nottingham Forest are 4-7 favourites for the drop despite taking seven points from the last 12 available. But at 9-1 fellow promoted club Fulham may be worth a small interest.

Recommended at 13-10 ante-post, the layers may have overreacted to the Cottagers’ decent start to the campaign.

Yet they are only six points clear of relegation and have the worst expected-goals against figure in the top flight, 27.3.

Any injury to Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has netted nine of their 24 goals, would be disastrous for their survival hopes.
