Paulo Fonseca the early favourite to replace Steve Bruce at St James' Park
Former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca is the hot favourite to become next Newcastle manager after Steve Bruce's long-expected departure was confirmed on Wednesday morning.
Fonseca, who was heavily linked with the vacant Tottenham job in the summer, is a best-priced 8-15 to replace Bruce, whose contract was terminated by mutual consent following the recent takeover by the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund.
Newcastle's new owners were expected to dismiss Bruce following completion of the takeover but he took charge of Sunday's 3-2 defeat against Spurs at St James' Park.
As well as a two-year stint at Roma, Portuguese tactician Fonseca has managed Pacos Ferreira, Porto and Sporting Braga in his homeland and he also spent time at Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won three consecutive Ukrainian titles.
The 48-year-old was heavily backed in the next Newcastle manager market on Tuesday, being cut from 10-1 into odds-on, and his price has shortened further following the Bruce announcement.
Lucien Favre, another linked with the role over the last week, is out to 5-1 with ex-Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe a 6-1 shot. Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is 18-1 with his former England teammate Frank Lampard a 20-1 chance.
While a cash injection is expected on Tyneside, the most pressing concern for the new manager will be to seal Newcastle's Premier League survival - the Magpies are winless in eight league matches this season and sit three points adrift of 17th-placed Leeds.
They are 1-2 to stay up this season and 2-1 for the drop.
Looking further ahead, Hills make them 100-1 to win the Premier League next season and 7-1 to claim title glory by the end of the 2026-27 season.
