Match preview
Newcastle snatched a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Sunday and they can also do their best work in the second half of their EFL Cup fourth-round clash at Newport.
Steve Bruce's side won 7-0 at League Two Morecambe in last Wednesday's third-round clash but they are unlikely to get such an easy ride against County, who have gained a worthy reputation as giantkillers.
Newport won 2-1 at home to Leicester in an FA Cup third-round tie in January 2019 and had been on the brink of beating Tottenham the year before until Harry Kane's late penalty rescued a 1-1 draw for Spurs.
This season the Welsh outfit have been ruffling feathers in the EFL Cup, registering victories at home to Championship sides Swansea (2-0) and Watford (3-1), and they are third in League Two with seven points from three games.
However, the gap between the fourth division and the top flight is as wide as ever and Newcastle can find a way to win, even if a few key players are rested.
Newport can be expected to throw everything at Newcastle in the early stages but the Premier League side should grow into the game and ease to victory.
Key stat
Newport have not trailed at the break in their last seven fixtures.
