Newcastle Jets got off to a disappointing start in the 2018-19 A-League, losing 2-1 at Wellington Phoenix, but it may be too soon to write off Ernie Merrick's side, who look overpriced to beat Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium.

Last season the Jets finished second to Sydney FC in the regular season and went on to reach the Grand Final where they lost 1-0 at home to Melbourne Victory.

They should be competitive again, although they can no longer call on Socceroos attacker Andrew Nabbout, who switched to Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds in March.

There are still plenty of goals in the side and attacking midfielder Dimitri Petratos, their joint-top scorer last season with ten goals, was on target in the loss to Wellington.

Adelaide started their campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Sydney FC but were fifth in 2017-18, 11 points behind Newcastle, and are a likely mid-table outfit this term.

United had mixed home results last season, winning five, drawing four and losing four, and look on the short side at a shade of odds-against.
