Portugal vs Spain predictions

Two scintillating semi-finals should add up to a thrilling final as Portugal and Spain meet in the Nations League showpiece in Munich on Sunday evening.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner as Portugal battled back to stun Germany 2-1 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday before Spain beat France 5-4 the following night.

That scoreline flattered Les Bleus rather than La Roja, who raced into a 5-1 lead before conceding three late goals in Stuttgart.

There should be no such complacency from Spain against their Iberian rivals and the European champions are worth backing to win the final in 90 minutes.

That has been a winning bet in 14 of Spain's last 18 internationals, including the 2-1 wins over France and England in the Euro 2024 semi-final and final.

They had a tough route to glory last summer, coming through a group that included Italy and Croatia and beating tournament hosts Germany in the quarter-finals.

Even without Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, who is continuing his recovery from a serious knee injury, Spain are an imposing unit. Their substitutes against France included Barcelona midfielders Gavi and Dani Olmo plus Paris St-Germain Champions League winner Fabian Ruiz.

La Roja supporters will be hoping that the Nations League is the second leg of a glorious hat-trick. After winning last summer's Euros, Spain's 2026 World Cup odds have tumbled from 9-1 to 11-2, thanks in part to the emergence of Lamine Yamal.

The Barca star scored twice against France but Spain have goal threats all over the pitch. Centre-back Dean Huijsen's acrobatic volley was disallowed due to a tight offside call and midfielder Pedri burst into the box to score an excellent fourth goal.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez's substitutions changed the game against injury-hit Germany on Wednesday.

Martinez's critics might point out that he was only fixing the mistakes in his original team selection, after he left out the influential Vitinha and played his fellow PSG midfielder Joao Neves at right-back.

Reaching the final is a decent effort given Portugal's limp display at the Euros, where they failed to score in their last three matches against Georgia, Slovenia and France.

But they drew their last two away group fixtures against Scotland and Croatia and needed extra-time to get past Denmark in the quarter-finals, having lost the first leg 1-0.

The World Cup betting suggests Spain are the best team on the planet and they should demonstrate their superiority on Sunday, when winger Nico Williams is worth backing to find the net.

Williams scored the first goal in La Roja's quarter-final tie with the Netherlands, which they won on penalties after a 5-5 aggregate draw.

He had already had two shots on target when he smashed in a 22nd-minute opener against France on Thursday and also broke the deadlock in the Euro 2024 final against England.
