Oldham vs Southend predictions

Tube closures have wreaked havoc on Oldham and Southend supporters heading to Wembley for Sunday's National League promotion final, but those in attendance should at least get their money’s worth as there is every chance the clash for a place in the Football League could go the distance.

Both of Southend’s playoff games have finished all-square after 90 minutes. They drew 3-3 with Rochdale before prevailing in extra-time and then beat Forest Green on penalties in the semi-finals.

The Shrimpers, advised at 9-2 to be promoted in this season's Big Kick-Off and again at 12-1 ahead of the post-season, have lost just two of their last 19 matches and they avoided defeat in both of their games with Oldham this season, drawing 1-1 at Boundary Park before winning 1-0 at Roots Hall two months ago.

The Latics entered the playoffs with just two wins from their final seven National League games but have been flawless since, humiliating Halifax 4-0 before stunning York 3-0 on the road in their semi-final.

Draws have been commonplace for both clubs this season, with the Latics involved in 16 stalemates and the Shrimpers 17. Only two teams in the National League were involved in more.

With a return to League Two on the line, a cagey contest can be expected with neither team likely to run away with it.

Nine of the last 18 National League playoff fixtures have finished level after 90 minutes. With the last four finals going to extra-time, the 11-5 about the same scenario at Wembley looks a big price.
