Where in the world is it and what tier of football?

The 16-team Super League is the top tier of professional football in Malawi.

The Nyasa Big Bullets, from Blantyre, are the reigning champions and the most successful team, having won the title 14 times.

Silver Strikers, who hail from the capital, Lilongwe, have been top dogs on eight occasions.

What's happened so far this season?

This weekend marks the start of the 2020 campaign. Last season was a close contest with Nyasa Big Bullets finishing just a point ahead of Be Forward Wanderers, who are also from Blantyre.

The bottom three – Dwangwa United, Mlatho Mponela and Masters Security - were relegated and have been replaced by promoted trio Red Lions, MAFCO and Ekwendeni Hammers.

Who is the top goalscorer?

Last season's top scorer was Malawian national Khuda Muyaba, who bagged 19 goals for Silver Strikers.

Nyasa Big Bullets' attacker Hassan Kajoke was the champions' leading marksman with 17 goals and Nigerian Babatunde Adepoju weighed in with 15 goals for Be Forward Wanderers.

Are there any trends to follow?

Nyasa Big Bullets start the new campaign on a 20-game unbeaten run in league games and a nine-match winning streak.

Be Forward Wanderers have won their last seven matches and Ntopwe United, who finished 11th, have drawn just one of their last 29 fixtures.

Any famous faces?

Veteran Nyasa Big Bullets striker Chiukepo Mosowoya has featured 78 times for the Malawian national team, scoring 22 goals.

He had a short and unsuccessful spell in South African football with the Orlando Pirates.

Mosowoya scored one goal in 11 appearances for the Pirates and one goal in four games during a loan spell with Platinum Stars.

Give us a fun fact

The country's most successful team, Nyasa Big Bullets, have had four different names since their foundation in 1967.

Previously, they have been called Bata Bullets, Total Big Bullets and Bakili Bullets, after former Malawian president Bakili Muluzi.

Match preview

Nyasa Big Bullets are the heavyweights of Malawian football and can kick off their 2020 title defence with a comfortable home victory over Blue Eagles.

The off-season had been largely positive for the champions, who have snapped up 29-year-old striker Zicco Mkanda after the expiration of his contract with last season's runners-up Be Forward Wanderers.

They also agreed a new three-year-contract with 19-year-old rising star Peter Banda, who was their player of the season in 2019.

Bullets' head coach Calisto Pasuwa has identified strengthening his attack as a key aspect of the club's transfer dealings.

After announcing the signing of Mkanda, Pasuwa said: "Last time we had problems in terms of scoring and his arrival will make us good in the offensive game."

The Big Bullets seem intent on further improvement and may do even better than last season when they accumulated 70 points.

Blue Eagles, from Lilongwe, finished third last season and secured qualification for the 2020-21 African Confederations Cup, the secondary club tournament on the continent.

However, they finished 17 points adrift of the champions and lost 4-0 away to the Big Bullets in their December meeting at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The gap between the clubs could be even bigger this term and there may be value in backing the Big Bullets to be leading at half-time and full-time.
