Steve Agnew was odds-on to be the next manager of Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, but sustained support for former Boro midfielder Paul Ince saw the ex-MK Dons and Blackburn manager slashed to fill the vacancy left by Aitor Karanka.

Ince, who has not been in management since leaving Blackpool in 2014, was cut from 25-1 to 7-2 by Betway for the Riverside vacancy.

Caretaker Agnew presided over the Premier League strugglers’ 3-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday but was 8-13 with bet365 to be handed the permanent reins.

Former Boro manager Bryan Robson, who sat next to Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson at the United game, eased to 12-1 having touched a low of 11-5 with Paddy Power on Monday.

Arsene Wenger’s chances of staying at Arsenal beyond the end of this season continue to strengthen. The Frenchman is 1-2 with Hills to be with the Gunners on the first day of next season and 6-4 to have departed.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has agreed to join MLS team Chicago Fire. The German has made just four appearances for Manchester United this season.

Ireland’s preparations for Friday’s World Cup qualifier with Wales in Dublin are being hampered by several withdrawals.

Newcastle striker Daryl Murphy is the latest Ireland player to withdraw from their game against Wales on Friday. He joins Wes Hoolahan, Shane Duffy, Ciaran Clark and Harry Arter in leaving Martin O’Neill’s squad.
