Kashima Antlers, Japan's most successful club, moved to the head of the top flight for the first time this season at the weekend and they can gain the upper hand in their J-League Cup semi-final by avoiding defeat in the first leg at Kawasaki Frontale.

Sunday's 1-0 win against Cerezo Osaka took their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 matches and hopes of a domestic treble are still alive as they are also through to the quarter-finals of Japan's Emperor's Cup.

They overhauled long-time leaders FC Tokyo to move to the summit with six games to go and are eight points ahead of today's opponents who lie fourth.

Kawasaki will be buoyed by thrashing Shonan Bellmare 5-0 on the road last time but they have been less clinical at home, winning only four of their 15 league matches at the Kawasaki Todoroki Stadium, drawing nine times.

Brazilian forward Serginho, who has scored 11 goals this season, will be a big threat on the break for the visitors and they have failed to score in only one of their last nine away games.

The sides drew 1-1 in the corresponding league game earlier in the season and Kashima would likely settle for a similar result to set them up for Sunday's second leg.
