Defeat to Portugal on Thursday means Ireland will not get an automatic invite to the World Cup finals this summer, so manager Heimar Hallgrimsson will be desperate to at least go into Monday's final Group F game against Hungary with a chance of gaining a playoff spot.
Portugal are on the cusp of making their seventh successive World Cup which could bring the curtain down on Cristiano Ronaldo's glittering international career, and, after a 1-0 win over Ireland last month in Lisbon, they are a short price to repeat the trick in Dublin.

Ireland vs Portugal previewÂ
Ireland's hopes of booking a trip to next summer's World Cup are hanging by a thread and there is a strong chance Group F leaders Portugal will extinguish any glimmer of hope at the Aviva Stadium.
The Boys in Green have claimed four points from their four qualifiers and a playoff place is potentially still up for grabs. But the signs do not look good for Heimar Hallgrimsson's outfit, who are a whopping 8-1 to gain three points against the Nations League winners.
It took a 91st-minute winner from Ruben Neves to separate the pair in Lisbon last month, but any enthusiasm for Ireland is tempered by more than the odd factor.
Firstly, Ireland failed to muster a shot on target at the Estadio Jose Alvalade while their home win over Armenia and draw against Hungary both came when their opponents played most of the second half with ten men.
That's before you even consider that the scorer of three of their four goals in qualifying, Evan Ferguson, is missing with an ankle injury.
Ferguson's replacement, Troy Parrott, has scored 13 goals for Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and should be champing at the bit to start, but Parrott aside Ireland do not carry a great deal of attacking threat.
They are unbeaten in their last five games at the Aviva, but Portugal, who scored five goals in Armenia and three in Hungary, should possess far too much firepower, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo as hungry as ever for success.
Admittedly, Portugal have kept just two clean sheets in their last ten games, but they should be able to keep Ireland at bay, especially as the hosts failed to find the net in four Nations League games against England and Greece.
Parrott could make most of an opportunity
Ferguson's absence should present former Tottenham striker Troy Parrott with an opportunity to impress and his form for AZ would justify his selection.
He has scored 13 for the Eredivisie outfit this season and the confidence gleaned from that record could help him have at least two goal attempts.
Neves has an eye for goal
Ruben Neves was on hand to score the late winner when these teams met in Lisbon last month, so it could be worth taking a chance on him finding the net again at the Aviva, something he has done three times for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League this season.
Ireland vs Portugal Bet Builder
Troy Parrott to have two or more shots
The former Tottenham striker has been impressing in the Dutch Eredivisie and can take advantage of Evan Ferguson's absence.
Under 3.5 goals
It is difficult to see Ireland getting on the scoresheet so a couple of goals may be more than enough for the Portuguese.
Under ten corners
Ireland have forced an average of three corners per game in their four qualifiers and they may contribute little to the flag-kick count.
