Ipswich vs Aston Villa predictions

There will be many great memories at Aston Villa this week when the team they beat in the 1982 European Cup final, Bayern Munich, head to Birmingham. But before then, Unai Emery's side will have to continue their excellent start to the season against the team they pipped to the First Division title the year before their Rotterdam triumph.

Kieran McKenna's Ipswich side are a far cry from the great team Bobby Robson had at Portman Road and while their start to life back in the top flight has not been disastrous, a first win would undoubtedly be welcome.

This is the third member of last season's top four the Tractor Boys have faced already after a 2-0 opening-weekend home defeat to Liverpool and a 4-1 loss at champions Manchester City, and they should be cursing their luck again at facing another strong outfit right at the top of their game.

Last season's fourth spot is not looking like a fluke at all and not only have Emery's side continued to play the fast-flowing football that makes them a huge threat, but their tenacity too as they came back from a goal down to beat Wolves 3-1 last week.

A 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal demonstrates that they still have a way to go to be right up there with the elite, but it is a great time to be a Villa loyalist and they can gain another win at Portman Road as they look to kick on.

Maintaining the pace with City and the Gunners - Villa started the weekend a point behind the unbeaten top two - provides great motivation and while skipper John McGinn will be missed as he recovers from a hamstring injury, Emery has competition for places that can only help.

For instance, while Ollie Watkins is the king of the attack, Jhon Duran is pushing him hard after it seemed he would be off to West Ham and the emerging Morgan Rogers looks one of the league's most dangerous players going forward.

Their threat can come from all areas especially with so many fringe players desperate for a piece of the action and Ipswich may not be able to cope.

Sam Morsy's late equaliser at Southampton will have lifted the Suffolk faithful, but they may soon come to recognise this weekend that their opponents are, unlike in 1981, on a different level.
