Scotland vs Ivory Coast preview
There was supposed to be a party atmosphere at Hampden Park on Saturday as Scotland celebrated their qualification for the World Cup but a drab 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan left the Tartan Army feeling flat.
Steve Clarke’s men have a chance to make amends on Tuesday as they take on Ivory Coast at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool. Scotland fans will have warm memories of the city after they beat Wales at Anfield in 1977 to qualify for the following year’s World Cup but this clash will certainly be a lower-stakes affair.
Ivory Coast warmed up with a commanding 4-0 win over South Korea in their first game following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations trophy defence.
They were knocked out by Egypt in the quarter-finals of that tournament but qualified for the World Cup with a minimum of fuss, winning eight and drawing two of their ten qualifiers and not conceding once.
The Elephants have lost only one of their last seven games and are likely to be a tough nut for this Scottish team to crack, particularly after the lack of attacking endeavour Clarke’s side showed against Japan.
Scotland had only ten touches in the opposition box last time out and their attritional style, coupled with both managers' likely rotations, means that an entertaining affair looks unlikely.
They are unlikely to change their methods and may set up not to get beaten rather than to go for the win so backing the draw looks the best betting approach.
McTominay the key man
Scott McTominay remains the danger man in this Scotland team and he had two of their three shots on target against Japan last time out. The Napoli midfielder has 13 goals in his last 30 appearances for Scotland and is a tempting proposition to add to that tally.
Souttar a card candidate
John Souttar could replace either Scott McKenna or Jack Hendry at the back and the Rangers centre-half has been booked seven times in 21 league starts for the Light Blues this term so could be overpriced for another caution.
Scotland vs Ivory Coast Bet Builder
Under 2.5 goals
Ivory Coast did not concede in ten World Cup qualifiers and this looks set to be a cagey affair.
Elye Wahi to have a shot on target
The Nice striker is averaging 1.91 shots on target per 90 minutes since moving to the club in January and is likely to record an attempt on target again here.
Ryan Christie to be shown a card
The Bournemouth midfielder was booked twice in four World Cup qualifying starts and looks a tempting price for another.
